What makes this
print magazine/e-newsletter combo so cool?
Four Things: Strength of content mix. Extreme accessibility and portability. Price. And market expertise.
On Content: Popular energy trade print magazines have several common characteristics these days: they're expensive and most of the content you find inside are either dryly written puff pieces pushing an agenda, slightly rewritten news, poorly written commentaries or dense market analysis from smart guys talking their books. Why do you subscribe? Simple, you have few alternatives.
Until now.
Energy Metro Desk builds on the editorial legacy of Scudder Publishing Group’s many successful trade papers, including The Desk, The Risk Desk and New Power Executive to deliver a new breed of trade magazine: tightly written features, insightful news and analysis of policy and market trends, the latest thinking in energy trading and risk management, risk systems, asset optimization, credit and so much more. All of this in the same readable style you’ve come to expect from Scudder Publishing Group. Plus expanded coverage at a wholly reasonable price.
On Accessibility: Our surveys tell us that print magazines are ‘in’ again among the corporate upper echelon. You can bring them anywhere. You can read them at your leisure. And it’s a lot easier on your eyes after you’ve been staring at a screen for 10 hours a day.
But it’s not easy to archive or search a print magazine. You can’t download it onto your computer to read elsewhere. For these reasons, Energy Metro Desk subscribers can, for a nominal fee, receive both a print edition and an electronic (PDF) publication of each biweekly issue. The PDF file is easily archiveable, easily portable, quickly delivered and offers you the option of reading the print-out or online.
The combination? Total access and portability, ease of operation, archiveable and easy on your eyes.
On Price and Expertise: Let's face it, trade publicationshave gotten way out of hand price-wise. One particular monthly magazine covering energy risk issues goes for $899 a year – for 12 issues! Popular daily and weekly electronic newsletters are now well over $1,000 to $1,500 per year. And many of these publications are
largely written by young reporters with a limited understanding of the sector, or by folks from outside company. Where is the value in that?
On Expertise: Energy Metro Desk is staffed by reporters who average 20 years in the energy sector. The new guy is a 10-year veteran. Our access to top sources in the industry is unparalleled. And we are driven by a hybrid revenue model — low cost
subscriptions and moderately priced advertising sales. Each feeds the other, and, as such, our prices will remain low. $399 a year for a print subscription/PDF file combo? No kidding. We think it’s the best combo deal out there.
Our ad rates are 20% to 40% lower than the other guys. In some cases, 50% lower. And we don’t spell program with two m’s and an e.
Building on the long-standing reputation and industry expertise of Scudder’s leading newsletters, Energy Metro Desk is become an indispensible tool for mid-to senior level executives in the energy and investment sectors with responsibility for energy trading and risk management, policy and regulation, strategy, planning and finance, asset optimization, IT systems and corporate communications. Scudder Publishing Group LLC (SPG) has been a leading energy news and information publishing company since it was founded in 1997.
New Power Executive, which SPG launched that year, became the industry standard newsletter. Since then, the company has published a half-dozen weekly and monthly publications covering a variety of topics from energy e-commerce to risk management, boardroom issues and energy commodity trading.
The Desk, SPG's primary weekly publication on energy trading, enjoyed a wide circulation from 1998 to 2009. Read by thousands of senior trading executives in the power and gas sectors, both in North America and in the EU, The Desk was well-known for its informal style and emphasis on market analysis and grapevine-level coverage of the market, It has been considered the must-read publication for serious insiders for over a decade.
The Risk Desk, SPG's primary monthly, also enjoyed a wide circulation among energy risk professionals in the US and elsewhere.
Early in 2009, the company decided to combine these three publications into the next evolution in energy trade publications:Energy Metro Desk, a biweekly periodical delivered as both a print magazine and a PDF file.
While only recently launched, the publication can boast both a long history of industry expertise and reach and a wide circulation.
The company's founder and publisher John Sodergreen has reported and published on the energy sector since 1988 by way of various DC-based news publishers such as King Publishing Group, Telecommunications Reports/BRP and the Journal of Commerce.
Subscriber Profile: Primary readership is made up of senior-level executives (over 72% have titles of director, VP or above) in charge of energy trading, risk management, strategic and tactical planning, business development, new ventures, IT, marketing, sales and finance in the competitive energy and energy software sectors.
